Hello from Alaska! I was walking over at lake hood the other day,and noticed an 8E with no hat rack inside. This may be a stupid question, but is the hat rack in my 8f structural, or can it be taken out like the E model I saw, to allow for more storage room.

Thank you from across the pond,

Hi Jarrod,

Quite a few 8e and f's have what is known as an 'extended baggage' area. I am not sure if this is an official modification as they all came out of the factory with the hat rack type of bay.

I would say that most of these modified baggage bays are fitted during restoration or re paint as the rivets supporting the hat shelf have to be drilled out to remove it. Once the original hat shelf is removed a new baggage floor is fabricated lower down the fuselage that goes all the way back to Station 4. A new stiffener (as is fitted to 8a's) is fitted across station 3 to supplement the slight loss of structural integrity, (Fig #6 item 8 in the parts catalogue). The seat back then rests against the new stiffener.

I hope this is of some help
